As I have written about before, the legislative process has two important components: in-session and interim periods. We learn a great deal about proposed legislation during session, and we hear various bills for passage and ultimate signature by the Governor. But we also learn an enormous amount during interim periods. During the interim we spend most of our time back home meeting with constituents, but we also hold non-voting, informational committee meetings. These meetings prove invaluable as we study and question various topics, from the mundane to the controversial. Usually, these meetings take place in the Capitol Annex in Frankfort, which makes attending the hearings a bit complicated for folks here at home, several hours away. However, on occasion the joint interim committees will take their hearings on the road to tour various locations and hear testimony that is relevant to that committee's jurisdiction. As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I wanted the people in my district to have the opportunity to bear witness to the work of the committee, so I selected Hopkinsville as the location for the October meeting.
In addition to the interim Judiciary committee meeting, my Co-Chair Rep. John Tilley and I will be hosting the next meeting of the Juvenile Code Task Force (JCTF) in Hopkinsville later that same day.
